Skeleton Bowl

in Sandblasted Pine

Picture

This object is made in pine rescued from a friend's garden.

First turned on the lathe as natural-edge bowl, it was then sandblasted to reveal the rib structure. The difference in resistance to the sandblasting process between the summer and winter growth of each annular ring allows you to (with some care) blast away the soft summer growth and leave behind the rings of tougher winter growth seen.

The vertical ribs are summer growth left behind to maintain the structure of the bowl.
